Cosmetic Box Printing: What to Prepare Before Production

Cosmetic Box Printing: What to Prepare Before Production

Before ordering cosmetic box printing, start with the actual product and how it will be used. An attractive box with the wrong dimensions may allow movement, prevent the lid from closing or take up unnecessary shipping space. Defining the details early helps your printer assess suitable materials, structure and pricing more accurately.

1. Measure the actual product before sizing the box

Prepare the bottle, jar or tube you will actually sell, including its cap, pump and relevant seals. Measure its widest points and overall height. Do not determine box dimensions from volume alone: different 30 ml bottles can have different shapes. State whether your box measurements are internal or external.

For sets containing several items, explain their arrangement and any accessories, such as instructions or inserts. Ask for an unprinted sample to test with the real products before approving the dieline.

2. Match the structure to weight and opening requirements

Tuck-end boxes are common for small products. Heavier items may need a different base structure or additional securing. If the product must stay in place, assess inserts or internal dividers at the same time. Do not judge strength from reference photographs alone.

3. Discuss paper and surface feel before decoration

Tell your printer the product weight, display method and shipping arrangements. Paper suitability depends on type, actual thickness, box size and structure. GSM alone cannot tell you everything. See our guide to choosing art card for packaging boxes.

Matt or gloss coatings, foil and embossing can express the packaging’s character, but affect cost and production steps. Choose effects that highlight the brand or important details, and request physical material samples when colour or feel matters.

4. Prepare artwork on the approved dieline

Obtain the manufacturer’s dieline before placing graphics. Clearly distinguish cutting lines, crease lines and glue areas. Keep important text away from cuts and folds as instructed by the printer. Have the person responsible for product information verify names, variants, quantities and text on every panel before production.

A print-file check does not certify the accuracy of product information. Brand owners should verify their text and applicable product requirements. Read the print-ready artwork checklist for colour, fonts and bleed.

5. Check samples and quotation details

  • Finished dimensions and opening direction match your requirements.
  • The actual product fits and the lid closes without being too loose or tight.
  • Paper grade, coating and decorative finishes are consistently specified.
  • Production quantity, delivery method and required date are clear.
  • The type of sample and the details it is intended to approve are agreed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I request a quote with only a reference picture?

It is a starting point, but also provide product dimensions, weight, quantity and photographs from several angles. An initial estimate may change once the actual structure and materials are defined.

Should I always choose the thickest paper?

No. Choose for the intended use and test an actual sample. Thicker paper may add cost and affect folding without solving an unsuitable structure.
